2026 Burial Insurance Cost Study: What 38,256 Real Policies Reveal
Most burial insurance "cost" pages online are built from quote-engine estimates. This study is different: we analyzed 38,256 policies actually purchased by consumers we connected with our partner carriers between January 2020 and July 2026 — what real buyers pay, what coverage they choose, what waiting costs, and how prices have moved since 2020. Current-price tables use the most recent 24 months (14,378 policies).
The median burial insurance buyer today pays $68 per month ($817/year). Half of all buyers pay between $46 and $103 per month. Full methodology below — every figure is a median from real placed policies, with sample sizes shown.
Key findings
Six things 38,256 real purchases tell us that quote engines can't.
What buyers actually pay, by age and gender
Median monthly premium among 7,890 policies with full applicant details, purchased July 2024 – July 2026. Coverage amounts vary by buyer (see distribution below).
| Age at purchase | Women | Men | All | n |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50-54 | $49 | $60 | $50 | 413 |
| 55-59 | $57 | $68 | $60 | 834 |
| 60-64 | $57 | $67 | $64 | 1,530 |
| 65-69 | $60 | $78 | $69 | 1,936 |
| 70-74 | $71 | $90 | $83 | 1,665 |
| 75-79 | $89 | $113 | $94 | 1,077 |
| 80+ | $91 | $110 | $101 | 364 |
Medians of real purchased policies, all coverage amounts combined. The 80+ figures reflect smaller guaranteed-issue policies (carriers cap coverage at older ages), which is why the curve flattens there.

Premiums are up 34% since 2020
Median annual premium of policies purchased each year — same product, same buyer profile mix, rising price.
Medians across all policies purchased in each calendar year (38,256 total, 2020–2026). The takeaway for buyers: waiting has two costs — you age into a higher bracket and the whole market gets more expensive.
The cost of waiting
Every year of delay raises the price — twice.
First, the sticker price: the median buyer in their 50s pays $669/year (n=1,247); at 75–79 the median is $1,133/year (n=1,077) — 69% more. Second, and less visible: older buyers get less coverage per dollar. Measured per $1,000 of coverage:
| Age band | Median monthly cost per $1,000 of coverage | n |
|---|---|---|
| 50-59 | $1.98 | 1,246 |
| 60-69 | $2.98 | 3,461 |
| 70-79 | $4.77 | 2,738 |
| 80+ | $7.10 | 363 |
A dollar of protection costs a buyer in their 70s 141% more than one in their 50s. This is the strongest argument for buying earlier — premiums lock in at purchase age for whole-life final expense policies.
The coverage people actually buy
The industry advertises $10,000 policies. Buyers choose differently.
Coverage amount selected on the application among 7,890 matched policies (July 2024 – July 2026). $25,000 is the modal choice, and 67% of buyers take $25,000 or more — consistent with a funeral (~$8,000–9,000 national average) plus final medical bills and debts.

Smaller-n rows carry wider uncertainty; treat differences of a few dollars as noise. State medians also reflect each state's buyer mix (age, coverage), not just carrier pricing.
The "$9.95 plan," checked against reality
The most advertised number in this industry, next to what buyers actually pay.
TV-advertised "units" priced at $9.95/month typically buy roughly $750–$1,700 of coverage per unit depending on age and gender — that's about $6–$13 per $1,000 of coverage at the ages most people apply. In our data, real buyers pay a median of $4.77 per $1,000 even at ages 70–79 (and $1.98 in their 50s). In plain terms: the famous $9.95 plan is one of the most expensive ways to buy this insurance per dollar of protection — its appeal is guaranteed acceptance, not price.
Methodology
Data source. BurialInsuranceCost.com is a consumer matching service: we connect applicants with licensed partner carriers and brokers, and our systems receive closed-loop sale reports for policies purchased through those connections. This study aggregates 38,256 policies purchased between January 2020 and July 2026 — from our current platform and its predecessor system's partner reports. No names, contact details, or any personally identifying information are used or published — only aggregated statistics.
Windows. Current-price tables (age, gender, state, coverage, and the calculator) use the most recent 24 months (July 2024 – July 2026, 14,378 policies, 7,890 with full applicant details). The trend chart uses all 38,256 policies grouped by purchase year.
Measures. All headline figures are medians (robust to outliers). Premiums are annualized as reported in sale records; monthly figures are annual ÷ 12. Excluded: records with missing or zero premium, records marked as non-sales, and report rows covering multiple bundled sales (their premiums are summed and can't be split per policy — about 2% of the historical file).
Demographic matching. 31,664 of the 38,256 policies carry applicant details (age at purchase, gender, state, coverage), either inline in the partner report or matched to the original application by internal identifiers. Per-cut sample sizes are shown on every table; state figures are only published at n ≥ 15, and the calculator enforces the same rule.
What this data is not. These are not carrier rate cards or quotes: they describe what a real mix of buyers — across ages, health classes, tobacco status and carriers — actually paid. Individual rates are set by carriers at application.
