Funeral Cost Calculator

Build an itemized estimate from published funeral home price lists — adjusted to your state where we have enough data — then see what real buyers pay to cover that amount.

1. Your state and service type

Line items marked YOUR STATE use the median of that state's published General Price Lists (3+ lists required); the rest use national medians.

How this calculator works

Every funeral home in the United States is required by the FTC's Funeral Rule to publish a General Price List — real, binding prices. We collected and parsed 197 of them across 49 states in July 2026 and use their medians here for the fees they standardize: the basic services fee, embalming, transfer of remains, direct cremation, and immediate burial. Ceremony-layer items (viewing, hearse, casket, printed materials) use the NFDA's latest national study medians, and cemetery items are shown at the midpoint of typical ranges — cemeteries publish their own price lists, separate from funeral homes.

For the full background behind these numbers, see how much a funeral costs in 2026, the state tables for direct cremation and burial, and what each fee means (and which you can decline). To size a policy to your estimate, start with how much burial insurance you actually need.

Ceremony medians: NFDA 2023 General Price List Study. Cemetery figures are typical ranges shown at midpoint. Premium figures are medians of real purchased policies, aggregated with minimum sample sizes (n ≥ 15) — your rate is set by the carrier at application.
